Meet John: Quick-Fire Personality Insights

Q: Who’s your favorite type of music?

A: I love all sorts of music, and go to as many gigs as I can – growing up with parents who introduced me to music from every genre and a good taste of the live music scene… I will try to narrow it down to five bands – Gorillaz, The Skints, Blink-182, Oasis, Linkin Park.

Q: Do you have any talents/ interests outside of work?

A: I am a huge Luton Town Football Club fan, and go to as many matches as I can. I love palaeontology (have always been fascinated by dinosaurs and evolution) and always look out for a Natural History Museum when I go somewhere new. I also enjoy astro-photography, fossil-hunting, wood carving, Rubik’s cubing, live music, competitive Pokémon battling

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Steak, rib-eye, medium-rare.

Q: Where’s your top vacation destination?

A: Brazil, Thailand, somewhere hot and full of culture. Failing that, Australia.

Q: Do you have any pets? What are their names?

A: I have an energetic French bulldog named Ivy (Ivysaur), who acts as my shadow whether I’m working or relaxing at home.

Q: What’s your favourite movie and/or television show?

A: My top TV show is Peep Show. My favorite movie (series) is Lord of the Rings .

Q: Who’s your role model?

A: It’s a tie between David Attenborough, Mary Anning and Dave Grohl.

Q: If you were a superhero, what would your super power be?

A: Some people say teleportation, invisibility, or super-strength, but I’d love to be able to fly. It’s about the journey, not the destination!

Behind the Scenes with John Davis

Q: What is your current role at Today Digital? Tell us what your typical workday involves.

A: I work as a content marketer for CX Today and XR Today, and have been with Today Digital for a little over two years. Here, there’s no such thing as a “typical work day”. No two days are the same.

Sometimes I’m building email newsletters, other times I’m creating eye-catching images, optimizing our websites, managing social media channels or creating content for Awards ceremonies. My priorities, and the tasks I do change as often as the wind.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in your field? How did your journey with Today Digital begin?

A: Content creation seems like a good fit for me. I’ve always loved finding a balance between creativity and science. Being able to build creative content, and then analyze it’s performance through a logic-based approach to data/analytics, allows me to have this balance at work.

I’ve also always had an interest in technology, so learning about pioneering tech brands and their new products is fascinating. With Today Digital, I can immerse myself in a variety of industries, new technologies, and keep learning and improving the way I market them.

With help from the editorial and marketing teams, I love coming up with new and exciting ways to put quality content in front of our target audience.

Q: What do you find most challenging about your role, or working in this industry, and how do you overcome these challenges?

A: My role is fast-paced and varied, which means I often need to juggle dozens of different tasks at once. It’s not easy- but I’ve found ways to manage. I plan and prepare for each day as early as possible, prioritize my to-do list, and tackle everything with a logical approach.

Q: How would you describe the company culture at Today Digital? What do you like or dislike about it?

A: Today Digital’s four-day working week has been a real game changer, giving an amazing work/life balance. I spend my Fridays gardening, doing house-work, walking the dog, seeing family, exercising and reading instead of working!

Working remotely, it’s important for the TD team to be able to speak to each other via Teams, where we have a ‘cameras on’ policy – meaning we can work together, and chat by the proverbial water cooler too.

The in-person events are great too – in my 2 years here, we’ve been to Amsterdam, Brussels, Cork, and Manchester for memorable weekends away.

Q: What’s the most memorable project or moment you’ve experienced with Today Digital so far?

A: It’s a tie between CX Awards 2024 and XR Awards 2024. Both of these events were opportunities for me to show off my project management skills. I headed the marketing push for these two awards, and made sure we had as much engagement as we could from winners, finalists and people with vested interests.

I also enjoy managing the more social side of remote working – I organized Football Shirt Friday, where we raised £400 for the Bobby Moore Fund, and I organized the Euros 24 football sweepstake.

Q: How have you grown since you started working with us?

A: I’ve previously had trouble being my true self at work – holding back opinions instead of voicing them the way I confidently do outside of work.

Working at Today Digital has allowed me to be my authentic self, being a big mouth and self-assured enough to know that my opinions are valid, logical and sensible.
