Meet Rhys: Quick-Fire Personality Insights

Q: What’s your favorite type of music?

A: The music and musicians I love most change from week to week. Right now, I’m listening to a lot of rap and hip/hop off the back of the Kendrick-Drake beef (#TeamKendrick). Pusha T, Clipse, Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast, DMX, J. Cole are all in the rotation right now. But, as everyone knows, I’m also an OG Swifty.

Q: Do you have any interesting talents outside of work?

A: “Talents” might be stretching it about – but I enjoy playing sports. I love football, golf, tennis, and squash. I also used to play a lot of rugby, before getting one too many concussions.

Q: What’s your favourite food?

A: I don’t like to describe myself as a “foody” – it seems pretentious, but I do like experimenting with new cuisines. I’m a big fan of cooking and exploring new restaurants, but pizza is my go-to meal. The beauty of pizza is you can get it for £2 in a supermarket or $30 in Brooklyn and it’s always good. It varies from acceptable to excellent, but it’s a very dependable, easily available food.

Q: Where’s your number one vacation destination?

A: I recently got married in Tuscany, so that has to be right up there. Even before the wedding, I always loved that part of Italy for the food, medieval hilltop towns, and amazing scenic drives. I also did a road trip through California a few years ago, which was incredible. The diversity of the landscapes and towns/cities was incredible. From Death Valley that looks like the surface of Mars, to the crazy characters you see strolling around Venice Beach – it’s all incredible.

Q: What’s your favorite movie or TV show?

A: Another one that I find impossible to narrow down. Veronica Mars covers TV and Film for things I will always rewatch. Films I’ve enjoyed recently include Kneecap, Dune 2, and Scrapper. Some of the TV shows I’ve enjoyed recently are Nobody Wants This, Sherwood, and True Detective (apart from Season 2).

Q: Who’s your role model?

A: I’ve never really thought about this before. I can say if I had the option to actually meet one celebrity, it would be Bob Mortimer.

Q: Tell us something unusual about yourself

A: I climbed the Great Wall of China and Ben Nevis in the same week.

Q: If you were a super hero what would your superpower be?

A: I’m an old school Dragonball Z nerd, so I always thought Instant Transmission (teleportation) would be cool. This would be particularly beneficial for escaping the woeful Welsh weather.

Behind the Scenes with Rhys Fisher

Q: Tell us about your role at Today Digital

A: I’m the Deputy Editor at CX Today, and I’m pretty new to the team, but I have a lot of experience in the customer experience space. I came to this role in 2023, when Today Digital acquired MyCustomer, and it’s been an incredible ride.

As a Deputy Editor, my role generally involves staying on top of all the latest news and developments in the CX tech space. An average day could include writing about the latest Gen AI-powered release, interviewing industry experts, or just researching upcoming trends.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your role?

A: For me, it’s the speed of the industry – how fast it’s always moving. This is especially true following the explosion of AI in customer service. These days, keeping up with the latest innovations can be tricky. In the current climate, a product that was a game-changer last month could be obsolete by next week.

Q: How would you describe the culture at Today Digital?

A: I would say we have the ultimate “work hard, play hard” environment. The company has always been ambitious (and the staff are too). Everyone is expected to pull their weight, but we all support each other too.

Plus, Today Digital is great at showing recognition and appreciation for the work we do as individuals. We’re constantly rewarded for our loyalty and passion, whether it’s with team meetups, personalized thank-you messages, or the four-day work week.

Q: What’s your number one professional goal right now? Is Today Digital helping you make progress towards it?

A: When I came to this new role, it was from a background in the customer experience space, but I was used to covering “CX” topics in a more general way. Since I started here, my goal has been to develop a deeper, more granular understanding of the technology in the customer experience landscape, and the trends that are emerging in the space.

I’m currently focusing on building my knowledge, whether it’s by collaborating with my team, reading the latest news reports, or interacting with vendors.

Q: What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you recently?

A: Simply moving into this role in 2023 was an exciting step, but from a more personal perspective, the biggest “event” in my life recently was getting married. I tied the knot a few weeks ago, as my team members know, and preparing for the wedding was probably the most all-consuming thing in my life for the last year or so.

Q: Where would you like to be five years from now?

A: As much as I love my job, if I could choose anything for my future, I’d love to have won the lottery, and be living the high life somewhere on a South American beach. Sipping on an ice cold beer, reading a new Colson Whitehead book, and soaking up the sun sounds perfect to me.
